How to Start a Plastic Recycling Business

In starting a plastic business, there are things you need to consider, just like going to any other kind of business. You have many options in front of you, depending on how much time, energy and money you want to invest in your business. You can start small, by collecting plastics and outsourcing processing to another company, or you can go big by buying processing equipment and do the processing yourself. Before getting started, here are some tips to guide you for success.

Things to consider before starting your business:

  • Gather information
    • Gather precise information through contacts. Thorough search on the information relating to this can be sourced from the internet. Apart from this get into the field and inquire about it. Meet the scrap pickers and find out the ins and outs of the business as they are ones who are there in the field and will give you the relevant information.
  • Make a Strategy Plan
    • Draw a plan to find out who would supply you the plastics and to whom you should supply. There are companies who buy plastics and recycle them for the result of getting fabric.
    • Decide whether a new plastic recycling business is needed in your community before getting started.

  • Choose your location well
    • Find a site for your plastic recycling business. Choose a spot with room for vehicles to drop off plastics. Make sure there is sufficient space for your processing equipment. Find a spot in a centrally located area to increase convenience for your customers.
  • Legalities 1st before you start
    • Apply for a business license.  Avoid recycling until you have received a valid license. There should be license obtained for plastic recycling business in your community. Hence, get along to find the same from the authorities and also let them know about your business plan. They should be issuing the permit to sell the plastics for recycling.
    • Go with the legalities accurately as this would keep the smooth running of the business for a long period of time.

Once you get that done, you are set to go ahead with the start:

  • Gather recycling equipment.
    •  Find best deals with used shredders, crushers, extruders, washers and solar dryers.
    •  Look for local processors to whom you can outsource processing if you can’t afford to buy equipment yet.
    •  Purchase a vehicle large enough to transport processed recyclables to your customers.

Finally, it is time for you to let people know about your existence.
  • Tell the community that your business exists
    • You could have advertisements done through the flyers given across the areas where you have started the business.
    • The shops there can be also considered in the list as they would be the main sources of plastics.
  • Begin collecting recyclables.
    • Pick up plastics from interested clients’ homes and businesses, and begin recycling.
    • Contact and follow up your customers
